My good friend, Richard Smith, is running a project called The Dollar ReDe$ign Project–an ongoing challenge to update / improve America's currency.

My wife and I had an idea about this. Thinking that bank notes are all about the physical experience, how they feel to you, we thought that they should be much more tactile and not necessarily so graphically intense. So, our submission is for notes that are made from a moulded plastic, are slightly three-dimensional like they're embossed and come in distinct colours. To add to the experience, each denomination would be a different thickness, so you'd know how much you had just by how it felt.

Apart from obvious benefits to blind and partially sighted people, the notes would become intimately familiar to anyone who uses them over time–and that's the point, money is something we all grow familiar with.

Money is something you hold in your hands.
